A Week in Las Vegas

I’ve just recently returned from the Microsoft Management Summit 2009 in Las Vegas. It was my first time to this convention and my second trip to Vegas. I also stayed in the same hotel as for the VMWorld 2008 convention back in September, the Venetian. I had a good time, but not too good of… Continue reading A Week in Las Vegas

Visiting the Andalusian Music Festival

Festival is, perhaps, a bit of an overstatement. However, there was a collection of artists who participated in the event held recently at the Rialto in Atlanta. My wife and I joined some acquaintances there to explore the culturally rich music of the Arabo-Andalusian. Representing the classical music were musicians from three cities; the Tunisian… Continue reading Visiting the Andalusian Music Festival

If you pay me enough, I’ll sing these songs at a karaoke bar

Plinky brought a new question to the forefront of my mind, and again it had something to do with music. Well, the first question it asked was something, something, presidential cabinet, something, something. Blah, blah, blah. I’m trying to do better with my political savvy, but for now I’ll stick to my music! “Name three… Continue reading If you pay me enough, I’ll sing these songs at a karaoke bar

Beating the Goat at Midnight

I call it Thunderhead, though I have yet to unleash upon it to confirm its namesake. It was midnight this Sunday morning when I finally got to beat the old goat skin into the night air. I played some variations on Saidi and Masmoudi to get a feel for the resonance and response on this new drum.

What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?

Frequency is probably a term more commonly associated with 80’s synth-pop artists and electrical sound engineers. However, it’s not to be underestimated or underutilized as a viable word in other situations. I worked with one of the more difficult teaching challenges in my experience yesterday at my drum circle. A gentleman joined us with a… Continue reading What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?

Cloudberries

From the folks that brought you surströmming, a kind of fermented herring, comes something a bit different to entice your palate! When I first heard “cloudberry,” I thought it a playful term for flatulence. Turns out, it’s an indescribable fruit found in northern latitudes. It’s rare, and rather difficult to cultivate as I understand. The… Continue reading Cloudberries

Road Rash is Like Diaper Rash, but Not as Cute

Carlos brought to my attention his recent exploration of road rash. Oh, Carlos, where can I learn more? Personal experience is often a better teacher than anything else.

Hide and Seek

Sometimes a new song is played and you instantly fall in love with it.  It could be that it’s a great emotional swelling in your body, or just something so groovy that you can’t keep still while you listen.  Other times, it might be a contextual reference that gives the song a special relativity. Imogen… Continue reading Hide and Seek

News from Philadelphia

People really get into their American history in ye olde American colony, Philadelphia. The U.S. Postal Service – the first one – flies no flag. At the time of its inception, there was no flag to fly under. We saw a young man riding his bicycle with the Libery Bell tattooed on his forearm. I… Continue reading News from Philadelphia

The Hot is Here to Stay

Well…that’s it, folks; it’s official.  Summer is here and it’s not going to be getting any cooler for a while.  Enjoy the longer days, bar-b-q’s, swimming, and sun.  The lake still isn’t up to a satisfactory level for those using it recreationally, but at least it’s still here! Balthazar and I swam in it just… Continue reading The Hot is Here to Stay
