The Vagina Monologues

My wife will be hosting The Vagina Monologues soon at her studio in downtown Gainesville. If you’re unfamiliar with the title, you’re living underneath a rock somewhere in a dark cave. The monologue started in the basement of the Cornelia Street Cafe in New York. Today, it has been put on by celebrities and colleges alike. Together, all of those involved in the monologues are part of a nation-wide campaign to stop violence against women – coined ‘VDay.’ The Vagina Monologues won the Obie Award in 1997. Having been translated now into more than 24 languages, it’s a phenomenon the world over.

An odd thing, though. Ever since my wife put the banner up in her window for the event, she’s gotten flack from pockets of the community. I guess it’s to be expected when you put the word, “VAGINA,” up in bold letters in a public place. Of course, I’d have thought that people would quickly realize what it was that they thought they were repulsed by, and then realize it was actually for an internationally acclaimed performance supporting respect for women. It’s funny how people get so upset about something they don’t actually understand. I’m sure that if these people knew what it was that they were fighting, they’d shut their traps and crawl back into the knot hole from whence they came. I’d love to show my wife that some part of the community is not moronic. Leave your opinion as a comment to this post so I can tally the ignorant and the enlightened.

  1. “Boys have a penis and girls have a vagina”
Guess that Schwarzenegger movie didn’t play here.
Honestly, who gets upset over the word “vagina”? What a bunch of pussies. I mean the complainers of course…

  2. I totally agree.. I don’t have the privilage of seeing the studio’s window display yet but I had called to talk to Fox I guess like right after the complaint was made. I don’t know exactly what was said but to upset her that much but usualy it takes a lot. From the way she sounded it was pretty rude. I wanted to come up to G-ville and kikc whoever said it in the mouth but it wouldn’t solve anything and I think that was just because I don’t like seeing people attacked for no reason. Anyways all I have to say is pride usually goes along with ignorance and it’s hard for some people to admit when they’re wrong. I’m still working on it daily.
I’m sorry that happend but the play sounds like it will kick ass anyways and I seriuosly wish I could be there to support it!

  3. When I first saw the sign on her Windar, I was ready to invite da boys to go with ma for a no holds barred night of porn. Soon dar afta I realized this really was a real smarty artsy play.

Seriously anyone can make mistakes, and it is human to, but soon thereafter one should correct themselves and apologize for their superficial, uneducated behavior. Now, posting something like this at Chuck-E-Cheese wouldn’t work, but this isn’t Chuck-E-Cheese. The people need to educate themselves and apologize, we are not presently living through the inquistion…
